Short Shorts for Summer

Karri and I are teaming up for Tone em up Tuesdays because we will both ROCK the short shorts this summer! Look for a link-up on Tuesday, and join us!

Unlike Karri, I lived in shorts pretty much from junior high til my early 20's. Living in California, I often wore shorts year-round. For me, it's always been my stomach that's my worst feature, and I didn't think twice about wearing shorts when I was a kid.

Kegger! I was legal by then, so don't call the cops on me. :P

This last picture was in Mexico on our grad trip when I was 17 (my birthday's in September, so I was 17 when I graduated). This was the only time I've ever worn cropped tops because my stomach has always been my least-favorite feature, and I felt so embarrassed the entire time I wore this shirt. I was so sucking it in for the picture. Someone needed to smack 17 year-old me!!

In my 2013 goals post, I listed rocking the short running shorts as one of my goals. I also want to wear shorts in public outside of running! For years now, the only time I've worn shorts, or really showed my legs in any way, was while running. I've hardly even worn capris. It's all jeans all the time for my legs, and that makes me sad. My twins were born early August, and I was miserable that entire summer in huge maternity sweat pants because I refused to wear shorts or even dresses. I hadn't worked out consistently in a very long time and had zero muscle anywhere on my body. More than my size, I hated how soft I was.

Now that I've been working hard to lose weight for a year now, I feel so much more confident than I ever did in any of the above pictures. Even though I'm a good 40-50lbs heavier than I was back then. I love myself so much more, and focus on the good changes in my body. Like my legs. They'll never look as skinny as they used to once upon a time, but that's ok with me. I'm fine with never seeing 120's again. My goal is not to look like that again, but to be fit and strong and I'm definitely headed in the right direction!
I promise I'll shave next time I take a picture of my legs!

Do you want to rock the short shorts this summer with Karri and me? Join us for a link-up on Tuesday! We're working on a Tone em up Tuesdays button, and figuring out how to even do a link-up now. :)

1 Down, 12 to Go

I ran my first (of 13 races this year) last Saturday. It was FREEZING! Luckily, we were at a State Park and there was a lodge with bathrooms and a little gift shop where we could all stand around until race time. Once the race got going, I warmed up enough to strip things like my hat and gloves, and unzip my jacket. It never did fully warm up, but that's ok. The cold fueled me to go harder than I expected to.

This race is a trail run, so there are spots where we all have to go single file. And it's on a mountain trail, so it's steep! The last mile or so is mostly downhill, though, and I flew! I ran the whole last mile between an 8:30-10:00 minute pace. That's insanely fast for me! Last year, the trail was very snowpacked and icy, so my friend and I walked a ton. I still managed to fall on my ass a couple times despite walking (graceful, I am not). We've had a really dry winter this year, so the trail was driest it's been in years, I guess. It was still snowpacked in a few spots, but no ice, and MUCH better than last year. Last year, I finished this race in 46:22, and this year my official chip time was 40:41! That's mostly due to the trail conditions.

I'm so happy to have kicked off my 13 in 2013! Feels so good to have that first race under my belt. The next one is a 4-miler a week from Saturday. I'm doing our local running club's Winter Series, which is 4 races beginning with 3.3 miles and ending with a 10k. I've never done more than the first two races thanks to weather and schedules, but this will be my year! I will be doing all 4!

Always hamming it up for the race photographers. :)

FlipBelt Giveaway!

The giveaway may be over, but you can still get a great deal on your own! Receive 20% off through 2/10/13 by using the code: tatwins. I can't wait to see all of your flipbelts!

Last week, I mentioned the FlipBelt I got to hold my phone, and loved it so much that I contacted the people behind it to see if they would be willing to sponsor a giveaway. And they agreed! One lucky reader will receive a coupon code good for a free FlipBelt in your choice of size and color! Thank you FlipBelt for sponsoring my first giveaway!

In case you missed my post last week, FlipBelt is basically a tube you wear around your waist to hold personal items while working out. It has two holes on the front and two on the back to slip your items in, and once they're in there, they don't move around much. You can also flip the belt inside out once you have it loaded to "lock" everything in place.

This is exactly what I was looking for! Something without zippers that would be easy to retrieve my phone 827503 times during my workout, and looks cute. I've worn it every day to the gym since, and it is super comfortable. The first day I wore it, I checked it constantly to see if it moved around on me, but it really didn't. I wore it on a treadmill run over the weekend, and quickly forgot it was there. It stayed put, and my phone was safe. I flipped it for the run because I was worried my phone would come flying out, and my phone is still new and needs to be well taken care of, but I was just paranoid. It hasn't even come out a little during treadmill walks without being flipped.

If you're like me and are between sizes in their size chart, size down. I sized up to a large instead of getting a medium, and wish I hadn't. It fits just a teeny bit loose right now, but I worry I'll outgrow it pretty soon. I sized up because I knew I'd wear it on my hips.

So on to the giveaway!!

You will have the opportunity for SIX entries. It's very easy to enter too. First, you must be a follower of this blog, so go over to the sidebar and click "Join This Site" in the followers section if you haven't already. Done? Great! Now head over to the FlipBelt website and try to decide on which color you would order. There are so many great options, so good luck! Now see the thingy down here? Simply enter your name and email (email won't be shared with anyone), click the box stating you're a follower, and write your favorite color in the box. Those are all required, and will award you TWO entries for doing them.

You also have the chance for 4 bonus entries.

1. Like Thin After Twins on Facebook.
2. Like FlipBelt on Facebook
3. Follow me on Pinterest. When you've done those, be sure to come back here and click the boxes below to get credit for them!
4. Pin it on Pinterest!

The giveaway will run until midnight Thursday (MST), and I will announce a winner on Friday. The winner will be randomly chosen using

Disclosure: While the FlipBelt company is sponsoring the giveaway, I purchased my own FlipBelt and was not given it to review. The opinions stated above are my own, and I was not compensated for them.

Which Fitbit Should I Buy?

I wrote this guest post for Fitness Unscripted recently, and thought I'd cross-post it here as part of Fitness Friday.

I’ve made no secret of my love of my fitbit. I’ve written about it a couple times here on my blog, and I've talked about it relentlessly to friends and family, and on various Facebook groups. I'm the one who often gets tagged when questions come up. :) I love it so much, and have talked so many people into buying one, that I joined their affiliate program a few months ago. For every fitbit that is purchased using my link, or by clicking the banner in the sidebar on my blog, I get a small commission. You may think I’m rolling in it now, but the fitbit is available at Target, Best Buy, Brookstone, and Amazon (among others), so I don’t get a dime if people buy through those sites. I’ve made a little spending money thanks to those who have bought through me, but not a whole lot.

I’m telling you this in full disclosure because I don’t want you to think I’m schilling it to get paid. Yes, the commission’s nice, but it's ok if you buy it elsewhere. I just want everyone to have one! It’s that good a product!
The One

Now let me tell you why you should buy a fitbit if you haven’t already. Smile

1. It's small & just clips to your bra, so it's not intrusive at all. Nobody's going to be asking you "what's that?" & it's not going to get in the way of your sexy date night outfit.
2. It syncs to a variety of apps, including mfp, runkeeper, endomondo, and both the Withings scale & fitbit's Aria scale. There are others as well. Here’s the full list.
3. On the screen, you can see your steps, distance, calories burned, and steps climbed (ultra & one) quickly.
4. The website is FREE! There is a premium membership you can purchase for an annual fee, but you don't have to if you don't want to. The free version has all the info you need, and you can use all the app features as well.
5. If you have an iPhone 4S or 5, iPad 3rd generation or higher, or the newest ipod, the One & the Zip will sync wirelessly. You just hold your phone up near your boob (or where ever you're wearing the fitbit) to manually sync it. It'll also sync on its own periodically. This is the #1 reason I decided to upgrade to a One. We got an iPad 3 for the family for Christmas, so I had to have the One. It was so fantastic while traveling to be able to sync whenever I had wifi on the ipad! No more digging out the laptop, connecting to wifi, and syncing it there. And I just upgraded to an iphone 5 today, so I’m thrilled to already have the One to be able to sync.
6. You have friends on the site & app & can easily see how you fare against them based on the past 7 days. This is incredibly motivating & gets the competitive juices flowing. And it's fun to talk trash. This is probably my favorite thing about the fitbit. Smile
7. If you have an Ultra or a One, you can track your sleep. You just press & hold the button on the fitbit when you go to bed, and press it again the morning. It tells you how long you slept, and how many times you woke up. It comes with a cloth wristband that you put the fitbit into to wear while sleeping.
8. The Ultra & the One are rechargeable. You just place it on the USB charger thingy & you're good. I don't know about the one, but I've been known to not charge my ultra for a month, and I've never had it die on me. The Zip has a replaceable battery that's supposed to last about 6 months.

The Ultra has now been discontinued on the fitbit site, but you can find it for about $70-80 in stores. At least until they sell out.  The One and the Zip are the newest models, and they both sync wirelessly to the newest Apple products. The biggest difference between the two is that the Zip doesn’t track stairs climbed or sleep. I used to have the original fitbit that didn’t track stairs, so I didn’t think it was a big deal to track stairs. Since having my Ultra for several months, however, I couldn’t do without the stairs now! It’s not a dealbreaker, but I would definitely miss it going back to not having it. The sleep I could do without since I NEVER track that anyway. It was fun the first couple weeks, and then I quickly forgot about it. The Zip also doesn't have a stopwatch like the One. This is handy if you want to track individual workouts. You simply press and hold the button on the One until the timer starts, and press and hold it again when you're done. It's also how you set the sleep tracking feature. The Zip sells for $59, and the One is $99. The Zip comes in 5 fun colors, and the One comes in 2.
The Zip
I’ve now had the One (which I bought with my own money and was not a freebie, btw) for a week or two, and I love it! There isn’t any difference on the display, though it looks much crisper and clearer than the Ultra did, and really not a huge difference overall. Like I said, the biggest selling point was the ability to wirelessly sync with Apple products. It’s a huge convenience to be able to sync it any time vs. whenever I happen to be near my laptop. I love it!

Have I convinced you yet? I hope so! Now get out there and buy yourself a fitbit. :) Please use my link, or you can click the banner below, to buy it, but I totally understand if you don't!

I Workout!

Ok, first off. You guys? All of you rock my world!! I never dreamed I'd be at over 200 likes within the first day! I fully expected to sit at about 10 or 20 for a long time. Thank you so much for the love!

I've been doing Jamie Eason's LiveFit program for a couple months now, and I absolutely love it. It took me a few tries to graduate from weeks 1 and 2 since I'm a slacker and kept taking a week or two off and starting over. I'm currently on Phase 1 week 3, and looking forward to Phase 2.

I was so scared of the weight room before because I didn't really know what to do. I was intimidated by it all, and didn't know where to start. LiveFit made it easy to know just what to do! Each workout even has a video you can watch if you don't know what it means. I watched the videos a lot while looking for what I needed the first few weeks. I haven't been following the meal plans or avoiding cardio like I'm supposed to in the first phase, but I'm thrilled with the results I'm seeing! I'm getting stronger too. Today, I did my 3 sets of 12 (girl) push-ups, and felt like I had more in me. This was the first time I'd gotten through all 3 sets of 12! I'd been doing 8-10 per set.

Being a techy nerd, I knew I wanted to keep my workouts on my phone, and I found the perfect app for me after trying several. It's called Jefit, and not only can you add routines, but it also has a timer for between sets, and a little .gif image showing the workout so I no longer have to watch the LiveFit videos when I need a refresher. Best of all, you can download other people's public routines, so I was able to find all the LiveFit ones without me having to manually enter everything.

Since my workouts are on my phone, I couldn't use an armband in the weight room because it would be a huge pain in the butt to get it in and out all the time. I just stuffed it in my sports bra, but I didn't want to do that with my pretty new phone! I Pinterested an armband out of a sock, and that worked ok, but I had to hold my phone with my chin while wriggled it in every time. and the sock was itchy when I moved my arms, and chafed.

I knew I'd seen something at the half expo that would be perfect, but I could not for the life of me remember what it was called. I only had a vague memory of a belt with no zippers. After much asking around, someone pointed me to the Flip Belt. That was it! I ordered it Monday and received it yesterday afternoon since I learned it's a Denver-based company (way to shop locally!).

I tried it at the gym for the first time today, and I LOVE IT! The Flip Belt is exactly what I needed! And looks cute too. I do wish I'd have sized down, though, because I'm between sizes according to the size chart. It wasn't overly big, but I just worry it'll move around on my hips when I run with it. It was very easy to get my phone in and out between sets, and it looks great!

P.S. You can vote every day until February, so please continue to vote. Thank you so much!!

13 in 2013

Previously, I mentioned that I signed up for a 13 in 2013 challenge. That's 13 races that must be completed this year. It sounds like a ton of races, but they will be hosting 6 virtual races that will be completely free! AND there's another "5 by the 5th" virtual races you can sign up for. That one is a 5k or a 5-miler to be completed by the 5 of the month. She'll be hosting one a month until June. That's 12 FREE virtual races right there!

The deadline to sign up for 13 in 2013 was December 31st, but Jill Conyers has extended that to the 6th. So go sign up! You can do it!

I just added a page up there in my tab bar with all the races I'm planning on doing this year. I'll post race times up there as I do them as well. My friends and I had thrown around doing a FULL MARATHON in September, but they backed out on me. I convinced them to sign up for the 13 challenge, so now it's back on!

Oh shit. I'm running a full marathon this year.

2013 Goals

The chances of me sticking to anything are much better if I put it in writing, so here we go. I'm not calling them resolutions because those always get broken. Instead, I want to focus on what I want to accomplish in this coming year. I'm a "glass is half-full" kind of girl.

1. Complete the 13 in 2013 challenge.
I was going to write out all my races here, but think I'll do it in another page.

2. Make this the last year I focus on my weight. I will lose these last 30lbs, and be healthy and comfortable in my own skin (I'm getting there).

3. Continue lifting weights, and going to the gym. I don't just want to lose the weight, I want to be toned as well. Get up the nerve to take classes by myself when my friends can't go with me.

4. Eat cleaner. my diet has been much better this year, but I still have a long way to go. I signed up for Fresh 20 using this Groupon, so hopefully that will put me on the right track.

5. ROCK THESE SHORTS! at Target today, I decided I want to be one of those skinny bitches wearing the little shorts when running/working out. Being an apple shape, I've always had decent legs (it's my boobs/gut that make me cry), but I was sad to see how thick the shorts made my legs look. They look ok from the back, but the front isn't pretty. When the weather gets warm here, I WILL have lost enough weight that they'll look much better! I think everyone needs goal clothes, and this is now mine. I can't wait to buy them!
