1 Down, 12 to Go



I ran my first (of 13 races this year) last Saturday. It was FREEZING! Luckily, we were at a State Park and there was a lodge with bathrooms and a little gift shop where we could all stand around until race time. Once the race got going, I warmed up enough to strip things like my hat and gloves, and unzip my jacket. It never did fully warm up, but that's ok. The cold fueled me to go harder than I expected to.

This race is a trail run, so there are spots where we all have to go single file. And it's on a mountain trail, so it's steep! The last mile or so is mostly downhill, though, and I flew! I ran the whole last mile between an 8:30-10:00 minute pace. That's insanely fast for me! Last year, the trail was very snowpacked and icy, so my friend and I walked a ton. I still managed to fall on my ass a couple times despite walking (graceful, I am not). We've had a really dry winter this year, so the trail was driest it's been in years, I guess. It was still snowpacked in a few spots, but no ice, and MUCH better than last year. Last year, I finished this race in 46:22, and this year my official chip time was 40:41! That's mostly due to the trail conditions.

I'm so happy to have kicked off my 13 in 2013! Feels so good to have that first race under my belt. The next one is a 4-miler a week from Saturday. I'm doing our local running club's Winter Series, which is 4 races beginning with 3.3 miles and ending with a 10k. I've never done more than the first two races thanks to weather and schedules, but this will be my year! I will be doing all 4!

  2. In my first half, I made it a point to smile and stand up straighter when I passed the photographers. Always made me a laugh a little.

    1. That's when it started for me too, at my first half in September. It made the race that much more fun. :)
